Have you ever wondered what colleges want to know about you when you apply? Or how will you stand out from the rest of the applicants? Well, there are a few ways, and although some admission requirements vary depending on the school, you can expect that most colleges will want these commonly requested items:

  1. High school transcript: Academic performance is an essential factor in college admissions, so colleges will request a copy of your high school transcript, which lists your grades, GPA, and class rank, if applicable.
  2. Standardized test scores: Most colleges require either the SAT or ACT, and some may also require SAT Subject Tests or Advanced Placement® (AP®) exams. Test scores can be important in admissions decisions but are just one part of a holistic review. 
  3. Essays and personal statements: You may be required to submit one or more essays or personal statements as part of a college application. These written assignments allow you to demonstrate your writing abilities and share more about yourself and what sets you apart from other applicants.
  4. Letters of recommendation: Some colleges require one or more letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or other adults who know you well. These letters can provide insight into your character, academic ability, and potential for success in college.
  5. Extracurricular activities and achievements: Demonstrate your interests, leadership skills, and passion for learning by detailing your extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, volunteer work, and other achievements.
  6. Interviews: As part of the application process, some colleges may require an interview, either in-person or online. During your interview, you’ll share your interests, experiences, and academic goals and learn more about the college from the admissions representative.
