How High School Students Can Prepare for the SAT or ACT
Published January 5, 2024
The SAT and ACT are standardized tests that some colleges and universities use to assess a student’s academic readiness for college admission. Thankfully, there are simple ways to prepare for these tests, which are both multiple choice and cover a variety of topics, such as reading, writing, and math.
Set yourself up for success for the SAT or ACT by following these tips:
Familiarize yourself with the format and content of the test. Both the SAT and ACT have specific formats and content that are tested. Know what to expect by using practice tests and resources available online or in test preparation books.
Set a study schedule. Creating a schedule for studying can help you stay on track and ensure you cover all the necessary material. Set aside enough time each week to review and practice.
Focus on your weaknesses. Once you have taken a practice test or two, you may identify areas that you need to work on. Spend extra time studying these areas to improve your performance.
Practice, practice, practice. The more practice questions and tests you complete, the more comfortable you will be with the format and content of the test. Simulate the actual testing environment by taking timed practice tests.
Seek help, if needed. If you are struggling with a particular section or concept, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can talk to your teachers, seek tutoring, or attend test preparation classes.
Stay motivated. Preparing for the SAT or ACT can be a long process, but you need to stay motivated and focused. Keep track of your progress and celebrate your successes along the way.
Remember, while the SAT and ACT are important, they are just one part of the college admissions process. Your grades, extracurricular activities, and other accomplishments are all pieces of the puzzle, helping show the complete picture of who you are as a student.
